'Banner day for NBC'! Journo deletes & corrects viral tweets about 'children born to U.S. service members outside the U.S.'

It seems that today is the day that NBC News folks are going all-out to validate Trump’s media criticism. First there was MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell retracting yesterday’s big Trump/”Russian oligarchs” scoop, and next up is NBC News’ national security correspondent Ken Dilanian:

Correction: Experts who have looked at new USCIS policy say it applies if a service member adopts a child overseas, but children born to service members on deployment would still automatically get citizenship. I deleted tweets with the incorrect info. https://t.co/xeu8I3zrkJ

Dilanian had previously tweeted that the rule would involve all children born to U.S. military members outside of the country, and it made the rounds quickly:

So this is one hell of a correction (original in image). https://t.co/EWKLLyWOSR pic.twitter.com/OpkoTMCVMW

Well, that certainly changes things just a little:

How many retweets did the original get?

— Tim Carney (@TPCarney) August 28, 2019

Safe answer: A lot more than the correction.

I'd like to point out that this tweet is coming directly on the heals of @Lawrence saying he covered a story that did not meet NBC's "rigorous" verification standards. Is Trump really that wrong to be ridiculing these ppl every day??? https://t.co/iQb03L8noq

Sure is!

Better to be first than to be right, eh, Ken? https://t.co/IKNh6v2d1m

So this is pretty different.

I still personally think it's shitty, but it affects far fewer members than our wonderful media initially indicated because rush to publish. https://t.co/vLpC0sUeZP

Weird how this keeps happening. https://t.co/zFM30ooVhp

“Weird” indeed.

would be nice if people checked stuff like this *before* tweeting, but that is just a friendly suggestion!!!!! https://t.co/JqW1I02PU3

We’ll find out what the media holding off on kneejerk reactions looks like the next time a Democrat is president.
