The optics of a maskless Stacey Abrams sitting among a sea of masked children were so bad that she went on CNN Tuesday evening to apologize for her “mistake” and assure the citizens of Georgia that she would “set the right example” as governor and wear a mask. That’s funny, because the initial response from her campaign was to call criticism of the photo “a false political attack” that was especially shameful as it was related to an event for Black History Month.
“Protocols matter.” On @CNN, Stacey Abrams apologizes for taking off her mask to take pictures with students, calling it a “mistake.” She says she would “set the right example” as governor and wear masks but not be “hardline” if conditions change. #gapol pic.twitter.com/aXCVHcjcaE

Wow, what a disaster. I'm so happy. https://t.co/EwIhB8hAQd

If it was on CNN hardly anyone saw it

Wait… why is she apologizing? I thought her campaign said this was a “false political attack”, was “pitiful and predictable”, and was probably racist. https://t.co/tZ1vGXODHQ

Her campaign called this nothing but a racist attack. https://t.co/WoSHOfA97a

So is the criticism still racist and false, as her initial statement claims? https://t.co/QrrM75cWCh

Greg, so is it now not racist and a mistake or was it a racist mistake? Just need some clarification…

She didn’t just take her mask off for a picture. She had it off for the whole event, as evidenced by pictures from the school.
— True Scotsman (@truescotsman7) February 9, 2022
Why can’t she just say the kids should be unmasked?
— Stephe96 (@Stephe96) February 9, 2022
Because her campaign hasn’t got the polling results back yet.
Incredible that it took two days and multiple waves of maskless photos for her to come out and do this.
Stacey Abrams is one of the most overrated politicians of the modern era. https://t.co/WxHLgqM08c

She’s toast, and the AJC can’t save her.
— Will Collier (@willcollier) February 9, 2022
They are trying hard to save her. @gwlauren just said 48 hours ago that the mask criticisms were “silly”, now it’s a mistake….hmmmm
— Bentley Greg (@BentleyGregEsq) February 9, 2022
In other words Abrams doesn't like being called out for her blatant hypocrisy but will change as long as that's what everyone wants her to do.
— TheTwentyFirst (@TheTwentyFirst2) February 9, 2022
Mildly surprised she hasn’t blamed the kids.
“Those little brats set me up!”
— Spicy Orange Will (@spudhawg) February 9, 2022
It's ok, she'll never be governor. She can afford these slip ups.
— Chris (@Chalk_Demon) February 9, 2022
So we should just forget the angry statement her campaign put out?
