NBC News blows the lid off the 'persistence of traditional masculinity in sports culture' at Barstool Sports

We thought we’d learned from CNN hall monitors Brian Stelter and Oliver Darcy that it was wrong to attack another news outlet (besides Fox News, obviously) because the media had to present a united front against President Trump and his targeting of the news media with his calls of “fake news” being “the enemy of the people.”

NBC News, however, thought it would expose how popular sports site Barstool Sports “has fought progress” in the effort to remove toxic masculinity from the sports world.

We’re seriously doing this? OK, here’s Shannon Ho — and of course she cites at least one college professor:

“Not only has it been parallel, I think a conservative, reactionary response to women increasing prominence and equality is institutionalized by a place like Barstool Sports,” said Soyaya Chemaly, a women’s rights activist and the author of “Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger.” “I don’t have any sense that #MeToo or even Trump’s election was ever going to make a dent in that culture.”

Conservative ideology appears to be a core part of Barstool Sports — especially its portrayal of gender roles, with hypermasculine, sports-loving men and hypersexualized, submissive women. The site’s reinforcement of conservative American values is what makes its content stand out from its competitors, Marie Hardin, the dean of Penn State’s Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, said.

Wow, so a woman who wrote something called, “Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger” thinks that Barstool Sports is too traditionally masculine and not progressive enough. No way.

Glad that degree in digital media and gender studies is finally being put to work.

She is indeed, and here she is:

“The company appears to be moving away from sports coverage and focusing more on manliness,” Ho writes, so she must have been researching this piece for some time.
