'We can't control it': Canada dispatches troops to illegal border crossing … to assist at makeshift intake camp

All of those celebrities who loudly promised to move to Canada (not Mexico?) if Donald Trump were elected never quite followed through, but the media is publishing more and more stories about people pouring over the border into Canada.

In a piece with the headline “Back road to hope: Migrants flood Canada at remote outpost,” the AP reported Wednesday that Canada is sending around 100 soldiers to assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Quebec community of Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle. To defend the border, right? Just kidding … they’re setting up tents, electricity, portable toilets, shuttle buses, luggage trucks and more to accommodate thousands streaming across the border at a dead-end road that’s become a well-publicized but illegal crossing.

That it’s an illegal crossing is sort of the point. As the AP explains, under the 2002 Safe Country Agreement, those seeking refugee status who try to cross legally are told to apply in the U.S.; only by crossing illegally are they allowed to apply for refugee status in Canada. And as everyone knows, Canada is way better.

“In Trump’s country, they want to put us back to our country,” said a 10-year-old from Congo who had been living with his family in Portland. “We are not comfortable in America,” said a 38-year-old who came from Haiti to Florida. “Canada will be better than America.”

The AP reports that Canada plans to house 450 migrants in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium, though it could hold thousands.

U.S. and Canadian officials estimated that about 400 migrants crossed the border at the makeshift reception center just on Sunday.

There are some U.S. citizens, though, who are taking the time to immigrate legally. The BBC featured in a video a couple who decided to take the time to do it right. “It started as a joke on the night Donald Trump was elected US president,” reports BBC North America.

He’s not kidding about the candle. Let’s hope they brought enough to share.
