'There's a face behind that badge': Spouse says families of Charlotte police also feeling 'a lot of fear'

Protests over the officer-involved shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott continued in Charlotte Sunday outside the Panthers game, but on Tuesday, attention turned to police headquarters, which was evacuated after a suspicious package was discovered.

Fortunately, that threat appeared to be nothing more than a threat.

Still, police officers and their families say they, too, have been living in fear over the past week. Savannah Levins of WCNC spoke with the wife of a 20-year veteran of the force but concealed her face due to reports of threats being made against officers and their families.

“My heart wants people to know there’s a face behind that badge, there’s a husband, a wife, a brother, a son,” the unidentified woman said.

Some citizens already know and appreciate that fact and have been sending the police handwritten notes of thanks.

One protester who was busy giving free hugs during a demonstrations explained, “This uniform doesn’t make him a robot, just like your uniform and your skin color don’t make you a criminal.”
