Donald Trump certainly does like to cite poll numbers, and he’s tweeting today that a new poll shows that a strong majority of his supporters would stick with him if he decided to ditch the GOP and run as an independent; something he quietly threatened to do at the very first Republican presidential debate.
A new poll indicates that 68% of my supporters would vote for me if I departed the GOP & ran as an independent. https://t.co/ztP5d2ctZl

After his remarks about banning Muslim immigration at a rally last night, the heads of the Republican Party in New Hampshire, Iowa, and South Carolina almost immediately denounced Trump in tweets.
And this is why GOP leaders have been tepid in disagreeing with Trump's comments. https://t.co/FrmBBN8NTF

Trump did sign a pledge not to run as an independent, though. So, is he saying he might rip up that agreement and leave the party, or is he just reminding the party of his influence?

This will dilute the GOP vote, allowing Clinton to slither in.

@portnewsfeed @realDonaldTrump True. Not good. But a real threat to GOP. They believe Trump's supporters would desert him in that case

@realDonaldTrump please don't even start that talk of running as an independent party. We all know what the outcome will be if you do.
