Illegal alien accused this week of attempted rape, murder, let go earlier this month after traffic stop

Cecil the lion may have nearly 300,000 signatures on a petition calling for justice in his killing, but finding any news whatsoever on the murder of Margaret Kostelnik is a bit harder to do.

Police suspect that Mexican illegal alien Juan Razo on Monday attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl in a park in Lakewood Township, Ohio. Soon after, Razo is suspected of firing five shots at a mother and her two children as they walked along a bike path in the park, striking the woman in the arm. Finally, Razo is accused of killing 60-year-old Margaret Kostelnik in her home.

Razo eventually surrendered after a shootout with police. He is charged with attempted murder and will likely face additional charges. He was arraigned before a judge on Tuesday.

Unlike Kate Steinle’s alleged killer, Razo had no criminal record. However, he did have a run-in with authorities earlier this month.

Cleveland.com reports:

Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Brian Butler said during the court hearing that during a July 7 traffic stop, deputies contacted border patrol agents who advised the sheriff’s office not to detain Razo despite his status as an undocumented immigrant.

Juan Razo, who is reported to be an undocumented immigrant, appeared in front of Painesville Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti on Tuesday, July 28. He’s facing charges in connection with a crime spree Monday in Lake County.

Razo, who spoke with the aid of a Spanish translator, told Painesville Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti at the hearing that he doesn’t have a passport or a green card.

Cicconetti expressed frustration at Razo’s lack of documentation.

Razo told Cicconetti he has a birth certificate from Mexico, to which the judge replied, “That doesn’t help you here in the United States.”

Razo has lived in the country for five years and has no local criminal history, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

In response to a request for information, Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jaime Ruiz issued a statement that said, “we’re looking at the facts of the case to find out exactly what happened.”

Khaalid Walls, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the agency “intends to take custody of [Razo] and pursue his removal from the United States.”

It’s a bit late for that to help Margaret Kostelnik.
