With murders up 100 percent, Baltimore's Muslims turn to healing power of free ice cream

Even we’re surprised how often ice cream has come up in the news lately, and it’s not even summer yet. The Democrats marked Memorial Day weekend with a photo of President Obama eating an ice cream cone. Ben & Jerry’s, which handed out free ice cream at Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign kickoff yesterday, has introduced Save Our Swirled!, a raspberry ice cream “with an unforgettable climate message.”

What does this have to do with Baltimore, where 36 people have been killed so far this month, and yet arrests are down 50 percent?

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has said she and Police Commissioner Anthony Batts are “examining” if a slowdown in arrests is contributing to the deadliest month on record in the city. That investigation didn’t stop the mayor from scoring some free ice cream today, part of a plan by Baltimore’s Muslim community to heal the city.

The #LoveForAll #FreeIceCream initiative is the brainchild of Faheem Younus and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The group visited 18 city parks over 18 days and handed out ice cream to children and seniors — and Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby.

Sorry; if you missed today’s ice cream stop at city hall, you’re too late. Maybe the mayor will set up a similar program for police officers on patrol to lift morale.

As an aside, there’s no free ice cream involved, but the #LoveForAll hashtag has also been adopted by proponents of same-sex marriage, which makes for an interesting mix of tweets.
