Newly woke Hank Azaria willing and happy to step aside from voicing Apu on 'The Simpsons'

“Simpsons” voice actor Hank Azaria has addressed the controversy surrounding the character of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon before, but he told Stephen Colbert Tuesday night that it might be time for him to “step aside” from the character.

“Listening to voices means inclusion in the writers’ room,” Azaria told Colbert. “I really want to see Indian, South Asian writers in the room, not in a token way, but genuinely informing whatever new direction this character may take, including how it is voiced or not voiced. You know, I’m perfectly willing and happy to step aside or help transition it into something new.”

That’s comic Hari Kondabolu, who starred in the 2017 documentary “The Problem With Apu.”

So Azaria’s “willing and happy” to step aside? What if the showrunners say, “Just keep doing what you’ve always done?” Then what?
