Hungarian politician: 'Time to size up how many Jews do live in Hungary'

It’s never hard to find disturbing twitter stories using the search term “jews”, but today we turned up something really frightening. Hungarian journalist Pal Daniel Rényi was nice enough to tweet out English translations of some goings on in the Hungarian parliament — specifically the rhetorical stylings of one Marton Gyöngyösi.

That’s right, we have actual Hungarian elected officials who want lists of the country’s “threatening” Jews. Want to guess what the same people were doing last Thursday?

For those that thought old-school Nazism was gone from political life, Hungary has proved you wrong. Granted, it’s not like the Neo-Nazi Jobbik party was in the closet about its anti-Semitism. In August, they kicked one of their elected officials out of the party after he discovered that he had Jewish blood.  Still, it’s quite bold to go to the floor of a national legislature and demand a list of your nation’s Jews — even for them. Thank God these people aren’t in government, but the fact that they get 17% of the Hungarian vote is scary enough.

Here’s hoping these people never get any real power.
