Cheese Wheel of Fortune: Italian Parmesan Banks Face Economic Meltdown Due to Extreme Hot Temps

You’ve probably heard of a banana republic; well, Italy could be described as a cheese parliamentary republic. A large section of the economy relies on cheese (well, duh); Parmesan is so integral that it’s part of the Mediterranean country's banking system. Unusually high temperatures are threatening a cheesy meltdown.

Start here. (READ)

Inside this bank in Italy, there are hundreds of thousands of wheels of cheese stacked where you might expect to see gold bars.

The wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano are actually used by local farmers as collateral for low-interest loans.

Now, the extreme heat in Europe is impacting the entire industry as rising temperatures affect production and storage.

Tested are the cheese makers! Here’s more from CBS News. (WATCH)

Talk about the wheels of the economy!

Here’s more background on these cheese banks and how the whole loan system works. (WATCH)

(post continues) ...automated machines that brush and turn the cheese wheels every day to keep them fresh.

Italy has been turning Parmesan into working capital since 1953.

Parmigiano-Reggiano must age for at least 12 months, and many wheels sit for 24 to 36. Farmers pay for milk, labor and storage years before receiving the full sale price.

Credito Emiliano solved that delay by accepting unfinished wheels as collateral.

Producers deliver cheese to a climate-controlled warehouse and borrow against its future value. Specialists inspect, rotate, and age every wheel. Repay the loan and the producer gets it back. Default and the bank can sell it.

Extreme heat now reaches both sides of that loan.

Temperatures above 40°C can cut milk production by roughly 10%. Meanwhile, electricity use at aging warehouses has risen about 30% as refrigeration works harder to protect the collateral.

A mortgage remains valuable while sitting still. Parmesan gains value only if someone keeps it alive under precise conditions for years.

Italy turned aging cheese into a financial asset.

Now temperature control is part of credit risk.

And now you know.

Posters reacted exactly as expected by sharing cheesy jokes and memes. Warning: some of these are grating.

Hopefully, things will get cheddar.
