I can't put my finger on it. Maybe the distrust is rooted in the years of being lied to by the Democrat Party. I'm just throwing out a wild guess here. I jest.
But, the reason Trump won on illegal immigration is obvious. He properly framed it for exactly what it is - a foreign invasion. Commenters who voted for Trump confirm this.

Voters don’t trust Democrats with the illegal immigration issue because their party is actively facilitating the invasion. I know, crazy isn't it?

The Democrat Party is cluelessness incarnate. They have the very unpopular Walz doing fake town halls. They refuse to see that their policies and positions are directly at odds with voters, but think if they change their messaging approach voters will change their minds. Spoiler: they won’t. They’ve had four months since the 2024 presidential election and they’re still lost. I don't see them finding their way anytime soon.
