The Lincoln Project wants to start a third party in Michigan to fight the right-wing extremist GOP

Do you ever get tired of the Big Two and think it might be nice if we had a viable third party? There’s the Libertarian Party, of course, but they seem to have some pretty serious personnel issues of their own.

So where does that leave us? In order be viable as a third party, a new party has to have broad appeal. Enough people have to be interested in the message to build upon the foundation and grow it into something that can effect actual change as opposed to just blowing a lot of hot air and catering to a tiny fraction of the public.

And what has more broad appeal than common sense? Lord knows we need more of it in this country, and we’d like to think that there’s a relatively silent majority of Americans who would agree with that. So — and stay with me here — what if we had a new, Common Sense Party? Some true political innovators in Michigan are already on it:

Let’s do this! Sounds great! More:

“We’re concerned about the rise of extremism and the attack on free and fair elections,” said Jeff Timmer, a former Michigan Republican Party executive director who has been a vocal opponent of former President Donald Trump.

Jeff Timmer, Jeff Timmer … now why does that name sound familiar? Ah, right:

Now a political strategist and senior advisor for the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, Timmer is helping lead this new party effort in response to growing right-wing extremism fanned by the ex-president and supported in a crucial swing state.

The Lincoln Project! Of course. Well, with a track record like theirs, this could be very exciting! More:

The new party avoided being tied to one issue, Timmer said, focusing instead on supporting candidates who exhibit a “pro-democracy, pro rule of law, anti-extremist position.” He said there is more political extremism on the right than the left and it’s “dominating” much of the GOP today.

The Right is definitely more politically extreme than the Left. The Right wants the president to unconstitutionally bypass Congress on the national debt and other financial matters. The Right wants to expand the Supreme Court. The Right wants abortion legal up to the moment of birth, and maybe even after birth. The Right thinks they’re entitled to everyone’s children and that there’s nothing wrong with chopping off girls’ breasts or boys’ penises.

Oh, wait. Sorry, did I say “the Right”? I meant “the Left.” Because it’s the Left that’s in favor of all that stuff. Almost as if extremism is actually far more mainstream in the Democratic Party than in the GOP. Now why would Jeff get the two parties mixed up?

Because he’s a dishonest grifter who works with other dishonest grifters and just in case Donald Trump is not the 2024 presidential nominee and The Lincoln Project can’t fundraise off of him anymore, they need a backup plan. Think of how much money they could rake in if they try to start a Common Sense Party in every state. Think of all the CNN and MSNBC hits they could get! Think of all the vacations they could take! Think of all the pineapples they could buy!

There’s nothing inherently wrong with being anti-Trump or anti-extremism. What’s wrong is when you invoke and hide behind those labels while capitalizing on Donald Trump and endorsing extremist Democrats. And that’s what The Lincoln Project is doing. That’s what The Bulwark is doing. That’s what Tom Nichols and Joe Walsh and Evan McMullin and Adam Kinzinger are doing. That’s what all these Principled Conservative™ Resistance™ grifters are doing. And now they want to start a political party? Puh-leeze. I loathe Donald Trump as much as anyone can, but I’ll be damned before I ever buy what these bad-faith — and just plain bad — actors are selling.

Good thing I don’t have to devote any actual energy to worrying about The Lincoln Project successfully starting a third party.

Oh, snap.
