South Africa is far ahead of their emissions goal and all they had to do was have constant blackouts

I think I’m a pretty good steward of the environment, or at least I try to be. I try not to waste water. I don’t litter. I recycle and try to reuse stuff.

What I won’t do, though, is pretend that radical climate activists actually give a damn about making our world a more livable one. You’ve got stuff like the Biden administration flat-out admitting that their goal is to take gas-powered vehicles away from consumers and forcibly transition them to “green energy,” which is great news for wealthy green company investors like Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm but not so great for most Americans who can’t afford electric vehicles.

And then you’ve got stuff like this, with Bloomberg touting South Africa’s admirable feat of cutting greenhouse gas emissions ahead of schedule!

Of course, the reason that South Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions are lower is that there are blackouts due to power plants breaking down.

More from Bloomberg:

Output of the climate-warming gases from the world’s 14th-biggest emitter is already falling even though its Nationally Determined Contribution, a target adopted by the cabinet in 2021, only forecast a decline from 2025.

Regular breakdowns of the coal-fired power plants that supply more than 80% of South Africa’s electricity mean that less carbon dioxide is being pumped into the atmosphere and daily rotational cuts of more than 10 hours a day are further limiting emissions from factories.

“It’s unintentional,” Crispian Olver, the executive director of South Africa’s Presidential Climate Commission, said in an interview in Johannesburg on Monday. “We reckon we are well within the range” of meeting the 2030 target, he said.

South Africa aims to reduce its emissions to between 350 and 420 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030, bettering a target set in 2015 of emitting between 398 and 614 megatons by that date. The 2021 goal was key to South Africa securing pledges of $8.5 billion in climate finance from some of the world’s richest nations.

South Africans can’t keep their lights on or keep their fridges cold or their houses heated, but we’re sure knowing they’re on track to hit the country’s emissions target early more than makes up for all that.

Sure sounds like it.

It’s not actually at the end of Bloomberg’s story, but it’s likely at the end of South Africa’s story.

Well, then it looks like we’re dealing with a sick cult.
