This afternoon, the White House’s official account sent out this tweet about Mollie Tibbetts’ murder:
For 34 days, investigators searched for 20-year-old Mollie Tibbetts. Yesterday, an illegal alien, now charged with first-degree murder, led police to the cornfield where her body was found.

Shortly thereafter, BuzzFeed’s Jon Passantino seized on it, shaming the Trump administration for politicizing Tibbetts’ death:

Passantino and Darcy can sit down and shut up. Clean their own damn glass houses before they start throwing stones.
Not only have they never called our Democrats for doing exactly this after tragedies, but they usually cheer them on for doing it.
Pick a standard and apply it. If you want to call out R’s for doing this, then you better call out Dems too when they do the same thing.

And ftr I don’t agree w using this tragedy. Policy proposals against illegal immigration either have merit or they don’t, & that isn’t dependent on this 1 case.
But reporters who cheer on Dems citing tragedies to push policies can’t credibly call out the GOP for doing the same.
