With Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy retiring at the end of July, Democrats are tripping all over themselves in a mad rush to explain why he’s suddenly a horrible person.
Center for American Progress president Neera Tanden is near the front of the pack:
Just to state this: Justice Kennedy's son gave a billion dollar loan to Trump when no one would give him a dime, and Justice Kennedy has been ruling in favor of the Trump Administration position for 2 years as the Court decides 5-4 case after 5-4 case.
— Neera Tanden (@neeratanden) June 29, 2018
Allllrighty then.
And we sit here completely helpless in this matter.
— Vicki Roush (@vickiroush) June 29, 2018
We are not helpless….call your Senators and tell them to vote no. Go to a protest tomorrow
— Neera Tanden (@neeratanden) June 29, 2018
Well, if Neera at all aren’t helpless, they’re at the very least beyond help.
Had Trump given Justice Kennedy’s son a billion dollar loan you may have had a point, but your argument is what? Justice Kennedy’s son gave Trump a billion dollar loan, therefore Kennedy felt compelled to retire?
Yeah, that makes sense. https://t.co/nNDzGr0YbK

It makes sense … if you’re insane.
Well, here's an unnerving factoid: Trump's "most trusted" private banker at @DeutscheBank for 12 years was… Justice Kennedy's son! https://t.co/HmBseVLRcT pic.twitter.com/E5jqe7Dpsk

Why isnt this a BIG story??? Justice Kennedy's son was Trump's banker at #DeutschBank for 12 yrs .@maddow @SRuhle @AliVelshi @AriMelber @MaddowBlog @mikebarnicle .@jheil .@kasie @matthewamiller @Comey @selectedwisdom @benjaminwittes .@HallieJackson .@Lawrence

It’s not a big story because it’s a non-story. Even MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle — no defender of Trump by any stretch — knows it’s B.S.:
I worked w/Justin at DB
While he did run a portion of the real estate biz
He was on the institutional side of the bank -NOT private bank
Trump was a private bank client & I believe the lending happened after justin left DB
Trump wanted to borrow from the instit side/they said NO— Stephanie Ruhle (@SRuhle) June 29, 2018
We’ve always known progs were desperate, but this is impressive, even for them.
So the quid pro quo here is that the Kennedys gave Trump a loan and in return they… also gave him something else? https://t.co/7IZPfrJNvg

I'm so confused. This conspiracy only works if you assume a bank loaning $1 billion to someone is a favor *to the bank*.
— Alex Griswold (@HashtagGriswold) June 29, 2018
In terms of conflicts of interest, consider the fact that Obama nominated Elena Kagan, someone who *worked for Obama*. John Roberts worked for Bush's dad. The supposed link between Kennedy and Trump is much, much weaker than conflicts everyone agreed was workable.

Well, when you’re grasping at straws, no straw is too flimsy or small.
