Jake Tapper 'surprised' that Jimmy Fallon got so 'political' last night [video]

For the most part, Jimmy Fallon has managed to entertain late-night viewers without veering into politics. That was then … this was last night:

Watch @jimmyfallon, in character as @bobdylan, sing an updated "The Times They Are A-Changin" about #MeToo, NFL anthem protests, and the @nytimes (which is "not a-failin") https://t.co/scjM2pi3IZ pic.twitter.com/ZEBTlvpyA5

See for yourself:

Oh.

Jake Tapper found it all a bit strange:

I was surprised at how political this was, given that Fallon tends to be one of the least political late night hosts https://t.co/2tFxcqcs5m

Is it surprising, though?

Look at how many of your colleagues are sharing it on social media. That might have something to do with it. https://t.co/KUhOYRsRI8

Take Brian Stelter, for example:

There really is nothing sacred anymore.

Trying to compete with Kimmel.

He has to make amends for the hair-tousle.

Had to happen eventually. Too important of a demographic not to please. It’s a shame!

Actually started watching his show last night for the first time in months. Hoping for an entertaining finish to my day with no political drama. Made it through the first verse of his performance and realized it was not going to happen. Channel changed. I really miss Leno!!

We will all be made to care, Jake.

Is the plan just to wear us all down eventually?

Guess you missed this one. https://t.co/bnP2zh8Nhy

Sigh.
