Ellen DeGeneres’ birthday tribute to Katy Perry is getting quite a bit of attention:
Happy birthday, @KatyPerry! It’s time to bring out the big balloons! pic.twitter.com/w84DMphK3V
— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) October 25, 2017
It’s pretty clear that Ellen was just trying to be funny. But given the continued fallout from the Weinstein scandal and the increased focus on sexual harassment and sexual assault, should she have thought twice about that tweet? And is it indicative of a double standard?
Just my opinion, but this isn't funny. @TheEllenShow https://t.co/0qbxcVAOqI

Not appropriate, regardless of gender. I'd be offended if this tweet was about me on my birthday.

Not funny. This is not appropriate especially in light of Hollywoods treatment of women. Come on Ellen, you should know better.

Uncool, Ellen.

Harvey Weinstein: "Happy birthday @katyperry! It's time to bring out the big balloons."
…oh wait that would be wrong too.

That is sexual harassment! What if a man says that?
— Buck (@Outlaw2309) October 25, 2017
WTF?! If ANY GUY did that..SMH
— Gio Castellano (@giotheactor) October 25, 2017
how can this be acceptable ? #doublestandards #Hollywood
— Marc Nucci (@nuccim) October 25, 2017
So a woman can sexualize another woman & it’s okay? If a man did this it would be seen as horrible & demeaning. You’ve set a great example ?

This tweet would cost Bill O'Reilly another $32 Million. But, girls can do anything anyway.

So wait, it's OK for lesbians to treat women this way? Is that how it works now? Please someone update the rule book. https://t.co/efvae1jSvy
