That flashback left a lot of people wondering: How much did MacFarlane know about what was going on? And if he knew what was happening, why the hell would he make a joke about it?
This afternoon, MacFarlane addressed it:

So much loathing and anger that instead of speaking up on behalf of his “friend and colleague,” he joked about what had happened to her? Could he have done more? A lot of people think so:
He made a joke and smirked. He doesn't look angry and he didn't take a hard swing. Mild ribbing at most.
