John Kasich vetoes 'heartbeat' bill but signs 20-week abortion ban

I'm willing to hear a good, conservative defense of vetoing this bill but I'm not very hopeful. https://t.co/dBDxJNQlVW

Pretty big news out of Ohio today:

JUST IN: @JohnKasich vetoes Heartbeat Bill.

— Henry J. Gomez (@HenryJGomez) December 13, 2016

The bill would have banned abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Kasich gonna Kasich. https://t.co/YSVqWPFkSj

Indeed he is.

I really want to hear what kind of an excuse Kasich has for this veto. Insane.

Kasich did sign off on a 20-week ban:

BREAKING: Ohio governor #Kasich signs 20-week abortion ban, vetoes stricter provisions barring procedure at 1st fetal heartbeat. (@AP)

But he reportedly felt that the 6- to 8-week cutoff would not hold up.

His excuse is that based on Supreme Court rulings it would be deemed unconstitutional https://t.co/zR6MShoOS0

@JohnKasich: 20-week ban on abortion is "best, most legally sound and sustainable approach to protecting the sanctity of human life.” https://t.co/0DV0vlmCXE

And for what it’s worth:

Some pro-life groups were neutral on the Ohio heartbeat bill because its enactment would reinforce Roe https://t.co/RLz0OiisWx pic.twitter.com/rjvZpJhGjj
