Many think this is related to yesterday’s dust-up over Kurtz’s post about Jason Collins:
https://twitter.com/benhjacobs/status/330035704761573376
Yeah…after that apology by @thedailybeast, I don't see how the relationship with @HowardKurtz could have lasted any longer.
— DaniB (@rtrdanib) May 2, 2013
Sorry, @howardkurtz, that's what you get for downplaying the wrongness of your column by covertly editing it.

I still remember when @HowardKurtz moving to the Beast was big news – In spite of his mistake yesterday, I hope he lands on his feet

Not everyone was quite so diplomatic.

Wait. They fired Howard Kurtz? Let me find my tiny violin.
— RBe (@RBPundit) May 2, 2013
Mockery was swift and biting:
So will Howard Kurtz cover all of this on Reliable Sources?
— Daniel W. Drezner (@dandrezner) May 2, 2013
Maybe the Kochs will hire Howard Kurtz at the Los Angeles Times.
— Kim Jong-unthony Bialy (@AnthonyBialy) May 2, 2013
FYI… Howard Kurtz should have been fired when he believed the Weiner pic (pun intended) was faked based on Daily Kos "reporting."
— RBe (@RBPundit) May 2, 2013
Kurtz, in case you forgot, was the guy who tweeted this:
https://twitter.com/HowardKurtz/status/75195588559372289
Oof.
https://twitter.com/seanagnew/status/330038126024208384
https://twitter.com/NathanWurtzel/status/330037570467659777
Heh. MT @hale_razor: @gabrielmalor Kurtz leaving the Daily Beast? Whole thing appears to be faked.
— Gabriel Malor (@gabrielmalor) May 2, 2013
@NathanWurtzel His toaster remains loyal, so I'm waiting…
— SFK (@stephenkruiser) May 2, 2013
So, what’s next for Howard? We hear this guy’s got a vacancy.

Update:
Howard’s take on the situation:
I've enjoyed my time at the Daily Beast but as we began to move in different directions, both sides agreed it was best to part company.
— HowardKurtz (@HowardKurtz) May 2, 2013
This was in the works for some time, but want to wish all my colleagues continued success with a terrific website.
— HowardKurtz (@HowardKurtz) May 2, 2013
Newsweek and the Beast are great brands, but the time had come for me to move on to other opportunities.
