AP notes that uptick in objects being shot down by US military is 'unprecedented in peacetime'

You might be inclined to be somewhat disturbed by the recent uptick in “unidentified” objects making their way into U.S. airspace and whatnot. And we wouldn’t blame you in the least. The whole thing is really weird. And it’s pretty unsettling that the Biden administration is being so nonchalant about it. One would think that maybe they’d at least try a little harder to feign concern.

But then, what is there to be concerned about? After all, this is peacetime. A time of peace. Everything’s fine.

Just ask the AP:

Unprecedented in peacetime!

More from the AP:

China’s Foreign Ministry said the unmanned balloon was a civilian meteorological airship that had blown off course. Beijing said the U.S. had “overreacted” by shooting it down.

Then, on Friday, North American Aerospace Defense Command, the combined U.S.-Canada organization that provides shared defense of airspace over the two nations, detected and shot down an object near sparsely populated Deadhorse, Alaska.

Later that evening, NORAD detected a second object, flying at a high altitude over Alaska, U.S. officials said. It crossed into Canadian airspace on Saturday and was over the Yukon, a remote territory, when it was ordered shot down by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In both of those incidents, the objects were flying at roughly 40,000 feet. The object on Sunday was flying at 20,000 feet.

The cases have increased diplomatic tensions between the United States and China, raised questions about the extent of Beijing’s American surveillance, and prompted days of criticism from Republican lawmakers about the administration’s response.

OK, so we don’t yet know exactly what the latest three objects were that were shot down, but the first one was definitely a Chinese spy balloon (this off-course-meteorological-airship business is hilarious).

And when you’re talking about spy balloons from foreign regimes, how peaceful can “peacetime” really be, anyway?

Does the US military often shoot stuff out of the sky during peacetime?

Maybe we’re not. At least maybe we should consider the possibility that some governments may not be at peace with us right now.

Yeah … something just feels very off about this whole thing.

That’s sort of what it sounds like. Although with regard to the spy balloon, they let that one stick around for a while even after they knew what it was.

Seems like a fair question.

Inquiring minds want to know.
