I don’t know about you, but when I hear that a NICU nurse broke the bones of nine premature babies — tiny, helpless infants who couldn’t even cry out properly — I’m not exactly reaching for the “let’s go easy” button.
Not to mention our oldest was born at 28 weeks, so this is very personal for me as well.
Erin Strotman faced up to 45 years for nine counts of felony child abuse. Instead, thanks to Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor, a Democrat, she walks with just three years of actual time.
Oh, and did I mention Taylor is the Democrat running for VA-01?
Yeah.

Taylor negotiated the plea deal that capped the active sentence at three years. The judge handed down the statutory max of five years per count — 45 total — then suspended all but four months on each, just as the agreement required.
Taylor has explained that Virginia’s sentencing guidelines recommended a maximum of six months, so three years was somehow “six times greater.” She also cited missing video for some victims, the hospital’s delayed reporting, and tracking problems in the NICU. Families were consulted, she says. She even claims she didn’t want only three years.
Forgive me if that rings hollow. A nurse folds fragile preemies “in half,” causes fractures across nine sets of tiny limbs, and the Democrat prosecutor’s office structures the deal so the worst she serves is three years. That’s not justice; that’s damage control wrapped in progressive soft-on-crime packaging. Taylor has touted the outcome and the follow-up legislation she pushed on mandatory reporting.
Meanwhile, those babies’ parents stood in court describing lifelong trauma and shattered trust in the medical system.
Three years for systematically injuring nine of the most vulnerable patients imaginable. Taylor helped make sure that was the ceiling. If this is the record she’s running on, Virginia voters might want a second look at what “protecting the community” actually means under her leadership. The infants couldn’t advocate for themselves. Apparently neither could the full weight of the law.
