Mexicans Rage at American Beach Home: 'Stay Out' – But Migration and Remittances to Mexico Are Just Fine

The other day, I was scrolling Tik Tok and came upon a woman giving a tour of her family's Mexico vacation home. The home is gorgeous and mere steps from the beach. It comes with a staff of four and she rents it during the times they aren't there on AirBnB. One can dream so I checked to see what a 7 day stay might cost. It was about 14,000 dollars. It sleeps 10 so five couples could split that and make it doable, but it's still out of my budget. After that dream was dashed, I started reading the comments on the video and was shocked.

The comments were full of Mexican citizens angry Americans were buying these stunning properties and Americans scolding other Americans for going over and gentrifying Mexico. Basically, the message was stay out of Mexico and you can only visit for a short vacation, spend money, and leave. Anything else is disrespectful.

The owner of the home explained they paid the staff for a full year and when they were not there, the staff just stayed home and still got paid. She also clarified when they had renters, the staff did work, but the renters were expected to tip the staff, so their Mexican employees liked when they had guests because they'd make more money on top of their salary. Obviously, I have no way to verify that, but surely these people would not stay working for these Americans if they weren't treated well.

The cognitive dissonance of it all was what struck me most. When Americans say we don't want people from other countries moving here and taking over, we're 'racist'. In Mexico, they let you know they feel that way and they have no apologies.

The only people who aren't permitted to have pride in their country are Americans. It's so strange. When Americans say we only want citizens of our country to buy land or homes, we're called racist or bigoted.

Americans aren't allowed to be. That's the problem.

I believe it's time for America to consider this policy. Some Governors have done it on a small scale. For example, the Chinese can't buy land within a certain distance of military bases or farmland in Florida. This is to protect our military and our food supply. I'm not sure you can do anything about the harm already done by allowing foreigners to buy properties, but what if it was no longer allowed? Would housing prices become more affordable for first time home buyers?

Exactly. We pay for their medical care and their kid's education while they send money back to Mexico to stimulate the economy. It's all a scam.
