The nation was shocked to see a Republican win the governor’s race in Democrat dominated Maryland, but Larry Hogan won and won big. The biggest loser probably wasn’t his opponent Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, but Brown’s boss Governor Martin O’Malley.
Despite polling below some fictional characters for the Democrat 2016 primary, O’Malley clearly had designs on the White House, or at least a VP nod. His hand picked successor running on continuing O’Malley’s own policies in a state where Democrats have a 2 to 1 registration advantage over Republicans got beaten like a rented mule. That doesn’t bode well for O’Malley’s presidential dreams.

One of the biggest losers tonight: Martin O'Malley

Blue Maryland @GovernorOMalley grabbed the baton from one Republican and will pass it to another. Tough to spin that on the #2016 trail.

Another big loser tonight: Maryland Gov Martin O'Malley. Brown losing is directly tied to him and his policies. #NewsOneNow

Martin O'Malley will have a rough time running for president in 2016 on his record- which MD voters just voted against. #Hogan

@EmilyMiller No one will want him for VP either, which is probably what O’Malley was aiming for.

Martin O'Malley couldn't run for governor this time around, but the race still impacted his future, some say. http://t.co/tuzxAXLI51

@philiprucker @maggiepolitico Interesting because polling would show @GovernorOMalley was the drag on Brown

So is he RT @Juliemore: Wonder what will happen with @GovernorOMalley presidential ambitions if his chosen successor can't pull off a win?

Somewhere @GovernorOMalley is strumming his guitar, plotting how to blame this on anyone but him…and flexing in a sleeveless shirt #Caring
