Big changes were announced this morning for the “Miss America Pageant,” namely it will no longer be a “pageant” and from now on the “competition” that won’t be based on physical appearance and the infamous swimsuit part of the event will be scrapped:
NEW: Miss America is scrapping its swimsuit competition and will no longer judge contestants based on physical appearance, the organization announces on @GMA. https://t.co/Vucsi7dmEz pic.twitter.com/19MXxwgjw7

But this is all BS as the swimsuits and physical appearance are still part of the state competitions that determine who goes to the national competition:
Miss America will no longer have a swimsuit competition and will no longer call itself a pageant. No swimsuit at this year’s event, even though women will still do swimsuit at state level this year.

And some of these state competitions have already occurred, so women have already been judged on how they look in swimsuits:
Three state pageants have already occurred, with swimsuit. Nine have finals this weekend and preliminary competition starting today, including swimsuit.

I’m interested in seeing how the competition changes if they replace swimsuit with another phase (like Teen USA changed to fitness wear), and what they do to evening gown, which Gretchen Carlson said they’d also be tweaking.

Gretchen Carlson, Miss America 1989 and new chairman of the org’s board of directors, is calling this Miss America 2.0:
Join me on @GMA tomorrow morning on @ABC at 730amET for Miss America 2.0! Big news! #MissAmerica @MissAmericaOrg @MissAmerica pic.twitter.com/EFVKmC7EHN

And this is, to be charitable, not true. EVERY SINGLE WOMAN IN THE PAGEANT WILL BE JUDGED ON THEIR APPEARANCE TO MAKE THE CUT:
JUST IN: "We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge. And that means we will no longer have a swimsuit competition." – @GretchenCarlson on the major changes coming to @MissAmericaOrg https://t.co/ICRIsRN71h pic.twitter.com/IWKcVvCC50
— Good Morning America (@GMA) June 5, 2018
In other words, there will be 50+ gorgeous women who were judged on their physical appearance competing, but they just won’t show it to you on TV. Yeah, feminism?
