Arlington National Cemetery tweeted out a touching history lesson today in honor of Mother’s Day on “The Mother’s Tree” which honors the Mother of the Unknown Soldier:
Not far from the #TombOfTheUnknownSoldier, along Memorial Drive, is a memorial tree known as the Mother’s Tree and is dedicated to the Mother of the Unknown Soldier.#MothersDay #HonorRememberExplore

The original tree was dedicated in 1932, but it was replaced by an insect-resistant one:
The Mother’s Tree was dedicated May 8, 1932, and its plaque is the oldest memorial tree marker remaining in the cemetery.
The tree has been replaced with a river birch, the only species of birch resistant to the bronze birch borer insect pest.
