Carl Bernstein reports Bill Weld might drop off ticket to help Hillary Clinton defeat Trump

And just when you think 2016 can’t get any weirder, it gets weirder:

Carl Bernstein reports that Bill Weld is considering dropping out if he thinks Johnson-Weld will help elect Trump. #JohnsonWeld2016

Here’s the video with Bernstein saying Weld “despises” Donald Trump at the end:

Bernstein said the same thing on Twitter earlier in the week:

Bill Weld could be a hero–instead of a Nader–if he renounces his own Libertarian candidacy and endorses/campaigns for HRC. Stay tuned.

Now, how real is this Bernstein report? Their are doubts, to say the least:

Love how we're all citing a crank's explicitly-couched speculative burbling as proof Bill Weld about to drop from LP ticket.

Watch Bernstein interview. No evidence/sourcing, not even "talked w/Weld recently." It's basically just "gee it'd be nice if he dropped out"

— The Nats Won The World Series (@EsotericCD) September 18, 2016

Also, given how hard Johnson had to lobby Libertarian convention to grant him Weld as a VP choice, it'd be a hideously ungrateful betrayal.

I therefore conclude this isn't actually a story, it's just Carl Bernstein trying to lobby Weld to drop out using CNN as a perch. Shameless.

According to Bernstien, Weld would drop out after the first debate so we’ll have to just wait and see what happens.
