Bill Nye accidentally links global warming to El Niño instead of CO2

Whoops! Not another great day for not-a-scientist Bill Nye.

In his latest stunt, the former children’s TV show host called out real meteorologist Joe Bastardi over an op-ed Bastardi wrote last year challenging a link between CO2 and global warming. As Bastardi explained in his piece, it’s the El Niño that’s responsible for “spiking global temperatures” this year, not CO2.

Nye took umbrage to this and challenged Bastardi to two wagers, saying in a video posted on Huffington Post:

I will bet you $10,000. I predict that the year 2016 will be among the top 10 hottest years ever recorded. […] I’ll bet you another $10,000 that the decade 2010 to 2020 will prove to be the hottest decade ever recorded.

Well, for starters, Bastardi already agrees with Nye that 2016 is going to be a very hot year. Bastardi even predicted that last year, because of the El Niño. Nye even posed in front of Bastardi’s own chart with the prediction — “New Spike coming” — already on it:

Here’s the same chart from Bastardi that shows shows it’s the natural El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) weather pattern that’s driving current global temperatures:

Bastardi is predicting cooler temps ahead thanks to the La Niña, which is the “cool phase of the El LNiño.”

Bastardi also predicted the rainy weather in Houston, which Nye attributes to man-made climate change as well:

And we’ll end it with this. Bastardi isn’t even a “climate-change denier,” just someone who Nye disagrees with:

Forget the bet — what we’d like to see is a debate between Bastardi and Nye. Come on Fox News, make it happen!
