After his acceptance speech at the Republican convention, Obama and Clinton supporters accused Donald Trump of fear mongering. Yesterday, President Obama said Trump’s “doom and gloom” doesn’t match reality (except when it ran next to this other headline).
Former Obama adviser David Plouffe joked about the kind of concerns Obama said weren’t based in reality:

CNN’s Jake Tapper weighed in:
Not sure mocking those Americans who are afraid of crime and terrorism will prove effective https://t.co/uT5zG2cvls

At that point somebody must have sounded the “Obama flacks unite” siren, because a former Obama speechwriter got involved:
@davidplouffe so it's your opinion as a journalist that the fear-mongering in Trump's speech was accurate and warranted?

there's a line between mocking Trump and mocking the fears of Americans (jobs, crime, terrorism).
Latter not a good look.— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) July 23, 2016
I've yet to actually see a prominent Democrat mock people's fears. And if they do, they shouldn't.
— Jon Favreau (@jonfavs) July 23, 2016
my point is there is a line for folks to be cautious of here -mocking Trump versus mocking those willing to hear him out.

w/respect what might sound like obvious Trump mockery to a Democratic screenwriter in Los Angeles might sound different in Ohio

Enter Tommy “dude, that was like two years ago” Vietor, who was Obama’s former NSC spokesman:
pretty sure @davidplouffe is mocking Trump for trying to scare people with dishonest rhetoric.
— Tommy Vietor (@TVietor08) July 23, 2016
Democrats have to watch out that their mockery of Trump doesn't also mock Americans also concerned about trade, crime, elites etc
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) July 23, 2016
Totally agree. Smug is not a good look. But when Trump lies, cutting him down with humor can work well. See you in Philly
— Tommy Vietor (@TVietor08) July 23, 2016
Well, Vietor’s right about one thing:
should have stopped at "look"@jaketapper is right.

They should know.
