Rangel: Tea Party same group of 'white crackers' who opposed civil rights

Censured tax dodger Rep. Charlie Rangel is yet again demonstrating his intolerance for blanket statements about entire groups of people and his embrace of the “new tone”:

And he was off:

In an interview with the Daily Beast published Friday, Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) suggested Tea Partiers are the “same group” who fought for segregation during the Civil Rights movement.

“It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police. They didn’t care about how they looked,” Rangel said.

Because of this, Rangel said the Tea Party could be defeated using the same tactics employed against Jim Crow.

Rangel should be careful about employing the same tactics used to end Jim Crow, because he might only end up defeating his own party:

This is true, not that Rangel would ever admit it. For just one example, consider H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which passed the House of Reps. on February 10, 1964. The legislation was opposed by 34 Republicans, and 96 Democrats. Most of the opposing Democrats were from southern states. When the bill reached the Senate, it was vehemently opposed by a group called the “southern bloc.” This consisted of, you guessed it, mostly Democrats; 18 Dems and one Republican. They and their allies pushed consideration of the bill back into June of 1964. In the end, six Republicans and 21 Democrats opposed the Senate’s final version of the Civil Rights Act. Those Democrats opposed included Albert Gore, Sr. (this was just 16 years after Al Gore Sr. helped create one of the world’s most gaseous carbon emissions: Al Gore Jr.)

So, according to Rep. Charles Rangel, Al Gore’s father would have been a Tea Partier today, or something.

Or perhaps Rangel is just lining things up for his post-congressional career, if he ever retires:

We’ll now wait for the Democratic leadership in the House to call on Rangel to apologize. And we’ll wait a long time.
