Senate Democrats on Wednesday afternoon blocked the House-approved Stop Insider Trading Act, with Sen. Dick Durbin posting that the legislation did not adequately ban congressional stock trading, but also included "a sweeping voter suppression measure."

The legislation would ban members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing new individual stocks, and would require photo ID to vote in federal elections.
This was a way for Republicans to get Democrats on record on voter ID before the mid-term elections, something that Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said yesterday is "supported broadly by the American people."
But Democrats accuse Republicans of tanking an otherwise popular, bipartisan topic (congressional stock trading) by attaching voter ID to it, with Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying, "All they really want is to score political points before they head home to campaign."
Dems also argue the stock bill didn't go far enough, as the President was exempt and it allowed lawmakers to keep and sell their existing stocks.

My guess is that this is done intentionally to make sure that it is not passed for political reasons.
This infuriates me! They knew the trading ban wouldn't make it through WITH the voter ID so they attached it to the bill. Now we don't get either! They could care less what their constituents want because they keep getting elected anyway.
