Portland's mayor advises police not to pursue low-level traffic infractions in bid for racial equity

We can’t imagine there are any police officers left in Portland, but the ones sticking it out are being advised not to pursue low-level traffic infractions such as expired plates and broken headlights because data show that black drivers are stopped more often.

Sara Cline reports:

[Mayor Ted] Wheeler said both changes are an attempt to refocus on immediate threats and are also occurring in response to data showing a disproportionate impact on Black drivers for traffic stops and vehicle searches. While 6% of Portlanders are Black, he said they account for 18% of traffic stops in the city.

“The goal of these two changes is to make our [city] safer and more equitable,” Wheeler said.

Safer? Is Wheeler aware of the spike in homicides in Portland?

You have to wonder what job Wheeler could do in real life if he had to.
