This is a story that’s been developing for a few days and it’s really stirred up a lot of anger on social media. In short, a man named Botham Jean was shot by an off-duty cop, Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger, who had allegedly mistaken his apartment for her own and opened fire on what she thought was a burglar, killing him.
Guyger was charged Sunday with manslaughter.
Broward County Sheriffs and Dallas PD have secured their places in the competition for a Worst Law Enforcement Fails of 2018 award.

Hi hello @DallasPD, who can someone talk to about recalling your police commissioner? Thanks.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) September 13, 2018
Again, the man was shot to death in his own apartment, minding his own business. But police executed a search warrant and found a small amount of marijuana, according to FOX 4 television.

off duty Dallas cop stumbles into guy's apartment, for no apparent reason, shoots him dead. Dallas PD response: LOOK LOOK HE HAD WEED https://t.co/Gp8N7dmpNJ
— David Burge (@iowahawkblog) September 13, 2018
This is crucial evidence that at the time of the shooting he was probably … sitting on the couch playing video games, eating Taco Bell, maybe? https://t.co/JaVqG1FA89
— Allahpundit (@allahpundit) September 14, 2018
Who gives a fuck? Why are you reporting this?
— Brooke Binkowski (@brooklynmarie) September 13, 2018
Uh… so what? https://t.co/tcUewyrneY
— Ben (@BenHowe) September 13, 2018
How in God's name is that relevant or newsworthy? https://t.co/G7EIPpjua8
— Jonathan Swan (@jonathanvswan) September 13, 2018
WTF does this have to do with the fact that somebody broke into his house and murdered him?
— Chris Huggins (@crhcpa) September 13, 2018
SO F-ING WHAT?! https://t.co/2kYlMqI7n3
— neontaster ??? (@neontaster) September 13, 2018
How is this germane to what happened? https://t.co/83LrJMHztu
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) September 13, 2018
It's absolutely repugnant that you would tweet this. It's shameful victim-blaming. https://t.co/xPEknF1eKD
— Michael Jenkins (@JenksNBCS) September 13, 2018
Who.
The Hell.
Cares. You know what would interest me a lot more? Knowing the BAC of the cop who shot him after stumbling into the wrong apartment. Oops, I guess we don't get to ever find that out, but have this leaked to the press. https://t.co/66QXH2eti6
— Jeff B. (@EsotericCD) September 13, 2018
Now release the blood test of the cop who killed a man in his own home. https://t.co/xaMiam67qI
— Drew McCoy (@_Drew_McCoy_) September 13, 2018
What did they find in the murder's apartment? I mean, it wouldn't be too much effort to search her residence, seeing as how they're in the same complex.
— TJ (@timtheclassic1) September 13, 2018
So we are going to criminalize the victim? https://t.co/4Ndhf4znlt
— Steve's OKC Central (@stevelackmeyer) September 13, 2018
Worst. Ratio. ever. and this story is trash
— Jacob Threadgill (@JacoboLaSombra) September 13, 2018
This is completely irrelevant and a pathetic attempt to cloud an innocent man’s character. @FOX4 should be ashamed. @BLilly1985
— Meredith Lilly (@MeredithLilly23) September 13, 2018
Utterly completely offensive. I don't care if she found a complete meth lab cooking or (more likely) an active bible study group – IT WAS HIS OWN DAMN APARTMENT. She was stumbling home late and she needs to go to prison. How dare you blame the victim for LIVING. https://t.co/ggGQSXILEM
— Scott Hanselman (@shanselman) September 13, 2018
Utterly irrelevant. He could have been running the world’s largest illegal marijuana dispensary and that would make no difference whatsoever to the facts, or change that he was the innocent victim here. https://t.co/F1P7Sz8OY9
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 13, 2018
This may be a horrible tragic mistake, but there is no getting around the fact that she entered his home and shot him.
— KnoxvegasMike (@mlittle101) September 13, 2018
Death isn't the punishment for marijuana found via illegal search and entry of one's home.
What editor greenlighted this completely irrelevant, victim-shaming story? He or she should be relieved of their duties. https://t.co/4toVPmYCgI
— Julie DiCaro (@JulieDiCaro) September 14, 2018
It doesn't make one bit of difference if he had weed in his apartment – he was shot and killed for no reason.
That this information was released on the day of his funeral is so maddening. https://t.co/WmDEr8SxfQ

Reached by phone tonight for comment, a @FOX4 employee told @bri_sacks the station had “no comment” about this outrageous tweet. https://t.co/ytewtRqTdu
— Jon Passantino (@passantino) September 14, 2018
How is the tweet the story here? The story & outrage is the PD releasing the search warrant info which that outlet is reporting on. Are you guys for real? https://t.co/oclmZLQW0O
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) September 14, 2018
Right on cue. pic.twitter.com/8aiGuIZ3ad

Of course.
— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) September 14, 2018
Station reports cops did something dumb. Other journalists go after those who share information. Guess it's not one of those times they defend their own.
