There have been plenty of hot takes following today’s meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, but one that’s gaining traction, it seems, is people calling Russia’s attempt to influence the election an “act of war.”
Over at POLITICO, Mark Hertling and Molly K. McKew make that case and double down on it, calling Russian interference in 2016 “our Pearl Harbor, our 9/11.”

We’re old enough to still consider 9/11 our 9/11, but Hertling and McKew never say explicitly what they want, aside from a fight: “In the past, we have risen to the defense of our values, our ideologies and our institutions. It’s time for another fight. The ball — as Putin said — is in our court.”
Is it too late to back up a little and reconsider that whole Pearl Harbor analogy?
