Author called out on BS 'whitewashing' claim invents 'figurative whitewashing' gripe

By now everyone in America has heard about whitewashing, which is when a white actor is cast in a part originally intended for or played by another race. (Take, for example, Tilda Swinton in “Dr. Strange.”)

Nancy Wang Yuen, a sociologist who wrote the book, “Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism,” was upset to hear about another alleged example of Hollywood whitewashing: casting Jared Leto as a member of the yakuza.

The only thing is, the movie is about an American veteran of World War II who joins the yakuza — hence, the film’s title, “The Outsider.”
