By now everyone in America has heard about whitewashing, which is when a white actor is cast in a part originally intended for or played by another race. (Take, for example, Tilda Swinton in “Dr. Strange.”)
Nancy Wang Yuen, a sociologist who wrote the book, “Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism,” was upset to hear about another alleged example of Hollywood whitewashing: casting Jared Leto as a member of the yakuza.
Jared Leto as a Yakuza Killing Machine? No thank you to this #WhiteWashing mess. h/t @jesthevu https://t.co/TSrUc0ZasO

The only thing is, the movie is about an American veteran of World War II who joins the yakuza — hence, the film’s title, “The Outsider.”
White guy playing white guy = #WhiteWashing https://t.co/7IqfbNsRTE

He's playing an American character, this is hardly white washing ? https://t.co/xnEyq1SKln

It’s an American white man.
Being played by an American white man.
The character and movie were written

How is this whitewashing? It's literally about an American soldier who is an 'Outsider' to the Yakuza. It's in the title. Read first. https://t.co/vlOL0eSbt8

It's called THE OUTSIDER and is based on the story of a captive American soldier who is set free from prison with the help of his Yakuza cellmate you weirdo https://t.co/gdMOrkaK5i

This isn't whitewashing. The story is literally about a white dude paying off a debt to the yakuza https://t.co/MAuKJQHOcJ

This is actually a really creative and interesting concept for a show. Unfair to the writers who are just trying to create a new story https://t.co/8Tn5jE3QtI

Y’all lost me on the #WhiteWashing outrage when you got pissed off about a white guy getting the role of a white guy in Iron Fist. https://t.co/b7Jl0tPskv

SJWs are bigger crybabies than actual crying babies. All the Asian characters in the rest of the movie and the one white guy they cast because he's popular is gonna make you throw the whole thing out? https://t.co/bNUf66aBds

as an asian american, rather than being offended, i see a PREDOMINANTLY asian cast getting to do work they love and worldwide exposure. https://t.co/rvsNGscFkn

Not so fast, guys. It’s not literal whitewashing, but it’s figurative whitewashing.
There is literal #Whitewashing (Dr. Strange, Ghost in the Shell) and figurative #Whitewashing when shows set in Asia center around a white actor (The Last Samurai, The Great Wall). If you don’t understand the subtleties, do not accuse me of idiocy.
