WaPo: Christopher Steele is a hero who deserves America's thanks

The Washington Post’s opinion page Wednesday was a big fat valentine to Christopher Steele, author of the infamous Trump dossier, from Christian Caryl, an editor with The Post.

OK, we’ll bite: why is Steele a hero and why do Americans owe him their thanks?

Caryl writes:

Christopher Steele, the former British spy whose claims about Donald Trump’s ties with Russia hold center stage in Washington right now, drives Republicans crazy. They have recommended that the Department of Justice open a criminal investigation into his work. They released a formerly classified memo by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) that vilifies him — and now they are holding back a Democratic brief that tries to correct the record.

What is it about Steele that possesses them so? Could it be that his findings from the summer of 2016 — when the world was still wondering why Trump kept saying such nice things about Russia’s Vladimir Putin — proved so extraordinarily prescient?

Extraordinarily prescient? Keep in mind that Caryl writes in the same piece that the Devin Nunes memo was “thoroughly discredited.”

He also writes of the dangers Steele faced traversing “the world of Kremlin intrigue, where mysterious deaths are a common tool of statecraft. This is the world that Christopher Steele had to plumb, at considerable personal risk to himself, to chart Trump’s illicit entanglements.”

Um, he was doing an opposition research job for Fusion GPS and getting paid pretty nicely for it, we assume. And just what were those illicit entanglements he charted? Can we see them?

Don’t forget to thank Steele should you ever see him. He’s a hero.
