There was a bit of head-scratching on Twitter Monday night when the Washington Post dropped some clickbait that was too tempting not to click, assuming you’re not a black woman and don’t already know the twist.

White House correspondent April Ryan discussed Michelle Obama’s long, uninterrupted walks around the nation’s capital with the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart during a talk about Ryan’s new book, “At Mama’s Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White.”
So, just how does the first lady make it around town unrecognized?

Close … the secret (to all but black women, that is) is racial invisibility.
Ryan contends in her book that, “when it comes to being black women, we are invisible no matter what heights we have risen to and achieved.” That racial invisibility has allowed Mrs. Obama to leave the White House and wander about anonymously: “No one recognizes her … She’s basically unnoticed most times,” Ryan said.
Is it just us, or does that sound not quite right. Michelle Obama is a striking figure, standing nearly 6 feet tall, not to mention that she must have a security detail with her on those walks, right? Or is that overcomplicating things, and she really does turn invisible when she’s out and about?
