Man shot by citizen firing 'indiscriminately into a crowd' at Wednesday's #CharlotteProtest has died

NBC Charlotte is reporting Thursday evening that the man who was shot by another civilian as demonstrators marched through the city in protest of the officer-involved shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott has died.

Police had issued a report Wednesday evening that the man had died, but later issued a correction, saying that he was in an intensive care unit in critical condition. Reporters had claimed he had been shot in the head in front of the Omni Charlotte Hotel by another civilian.

Writing in The Daily Beast, Ryan James gives a first-person account of the shooting incident that has now proved fatal.

James, who witnessed the shooting, writes:

Around 8:30 p.m., a civilian fired a pistol indiscriminately into a crowd of dozens outside the hotel, turned and ran, leaving a man laying on the ground in a pool of blood on the sidewalk. There was a loud pop, then panic and confusion. Standing about 10 yards away, I looked down the barrel of a pistol. Several people were screaming, saying someone was shot in the head and a crowd quickly formed around the victim, a black male.

The shooter, a black male, was standing at the intersection of East Trade and South College streets with the weapon still aimed. He turned and ran. Emergency personnel arrived about five minutes later.

The shooting occurred on the second night of looting, vandalism, and rioting in Charlotte following Scott’s death Tuesday. Police said that four officers were injured Wednesday night, and several journalists were assaulted as well.

That was actually an improvement over Tuesday night, when a dozen police officers were reported injured, mostly by debris thrown by rioters.

Despite the 8:30 p.m. shooting on a street crowded with protest marchers, rioting continued for many hours afterward, with police deploying tear gas in an attempt to break up the crowd.

Update:

Police have opened a homicide investigation and identified the gunshot victim as Justin Carr, 26.
