A man armed with a meat cleaver who allegedly confronted two police officers Thursday near Penn Station in midtown Manhattan was shot but not killed during the incident. Injuries to the police officers were not life-threatening, thankfully.

The suspect, who boasts a long record of arrests, has been identified as Akram Joudeh of Queens.

ABC7 reports that the man is in critical condition, while one officer was treated for a laceration and other with a possible graze wound.

NBC News: Law enforcement sources say the incident in midtown began when the suspect was in the process of committing a non-violent crime.

The New York Post is reporting that the suspect became enraged after he found that his car had been booted, then approached an off-duty detective while waving meat cleaver. The one officer’s graze wound was reportedly from another officer’s bullet.

Ouch — the detective who approached Joudeh as he messed with the car boot reportedly suffered a 6-inch gash from his jaw to his temple.
