Surprise upset: AP calls Michigan for Bernie Sanders in very tight race

At 11:30 p.m., the Associated Press finally called Michigan for Bernie Sanders in a race that had remained too tight to call until nearly 100 percent of the vote was in. Sanders had emerged hours earlier Tuesday night, giving a very short speech before heading out, taking no questions from reporters.

Can somebody go ahead and call Michigan so that I can go to sleep! #MichiganPrimary

The #MichiganPrimary is another example of epic polling failures that have lead me not to quote many polls this cycle…

— Charles M. Blow (@CharlesMBlow) March 9, 2016

Sanders wins MI, stuns overconfident Clinton camp– and confounds the (awful) polls.

— Larry Sabato (@LarrySabato) March 9, 2016

Were the pollsters actually polling in the state of Michigan?

Last wk Bernie scrapped plans for more time in IL & went back to MI. Saw an opening and executed the win.

Such a repeat of last year @BernieSanders & Co. didn't think they were going to win Michigan — and are as stunned as anybody he won

— Glenn Thrush (@GlennThrush) March 9, 2016

.@BernieSanders has won Michigan primary, @cnn projects, a major upset over @HillaryClinton. Makes the next week so interesting in Ohio.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, Cruz and Kasich have switched places in the continuing battle for second.

Don't look now, but Ted Cruz has now passed Kasich in Michigan. #March8

Another interesting development: @tedcruz has surpassed @JohnKasich for 2nd place in #Michiganprimary https://t.co/38Ral6GH7C
