'Don't believe the liars': Teen reportedly turns gun on self after firing at police near Ferguson

Will #BlackLivesMatter activists and Ferguson residents believe this report? According to KTVI in St. Louis, a teen in Normandy, Mo., just south of Ferguson, fired several shots at police officers before turning the gun on himself. Anchor Rafer Weigel tweeted details of the story as they came in but issued several corrections.

Hold up: A self-proclaimed witness claims that police actually shot the man. Is there cell phone video?

There is video of the incident which shows very little but clearly captures a woman screaming, “Don’t shoot my baby!” The video ends with what sounds like a single gunshot.

The Riverfront Times reports:

During a press conference, a Normandy police spokeswoman said that teen was being “uncooperative” with the officers and his family before pulling a handgun from his waistband firing at the officers. In response, a Normandy officer deployed his Taser, but when it proved ineffective the officer opened fire as well. The officer’s gunshots missed their target, and the teen ran through backyards in the direction of the 7700 block of Paddington Drive.

“Officers in pursuit of the male momentarily lost sight of him; however, [they] heard one additional gunshot,” the press release continues. “As officer turned the corner, they observed the unresponsive male lying on the ground and rendered first aid. The male was transported to an area hospital where his condition is listed as critical.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch adds that Normandy police officers “were called to the 5800 block of Bermuda Drive about 2 p.m. for a report of a suicidal man” who was being followed by family members who were “seeking police and medical intervention.” Police are treating the incident as an attempted suicide.

As police wait for witnesses to come forward, plenty have weighed in on the incident on social media, accusing the police of lying in their report. The unspoken assumption: if the victim’s mother pleaded for police not to shoot her son, it’s obvious that they did.
