President's use of 'whack-a-mole' metaphor nearing drinking game proportions

President Obama held a press conference Monday afternoon to update the American people on the, um, progress being made in the country’s war on ISIS. It’s safe to say that the president didn’t cover much new ground aside from declaring,”Ideologies are not defeated with guns, they’re defeated by better ideas.

The president also repeated the importance of the United States not going it alone in the fight, lest we end up playing “whack-a-mole.”

“Unofficial White House statistician” and CBS News reporter Mark Knoller has as usual been keeping track of the numbers, and he has noticed President Obama’s particular obsession with whack-a-mole. It’d be a shame if the Obama Presidential Library didn’t house at least one of the carnival machines.

Speaking of the crisis in Yemen this January, President Obama warned that “to play whack-a-mole every time there is a terrorist actor inside of any given country, to deploy U.S. troops” would be an unsustainable strategy. And last June, in an interview on the rapid advance of ISIS in Iraq, the president asserted that “what we can’t do is think that we’re just going to play whack-a-mole and send U.S. troops occupying various countries wherever these organizations pop up.”

No whack-a-mole; got it.
