Harlem vigil for #Charleston9 includes recitation of 'prayer' by cop-killer Assata Shakur [Vine]

“Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just don’t know us,” said the Rev. Norvel Goff Sunday at the first service at the Emanuel AME Church since the massacre that killed nine parishioners last week. “We have shown the world how we as a group of people can come together and pray and work out things that need to be worked out.”

Outsiders are giving themselves the opportunity to weigh in on Charleston’s grief this week with a series of vigils and rallies around the country. For example, an “NYC Stands with Charleston Vigil and Rally” kicked off at 6 p.m. this evening in Harlem, although the focus seemed to be less on the nine victims of the shooting and more on white supremacy.

Here’s the assembled crowd reciting a piece by Assata Shakur, the cop-killer and fugitive who was (very briefly) honored with a mural at Marquette University. (For what it’s worth, Sunday’s congregation in Charleston applauded Rev. Goff when he said, “I want to say thank you to law enforcement. I have no problem in doing that. I want to thank them.”)
