The day following his sentencing under the Espionage Act to 35 years’ imprisonment for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks, Private Bradley Manning announced that he wanted to be known as Chelsea and desired to begin hormone replacement therapy. That was August of 2013, and today, a Defense Department official has announced that the hormone therapy has been approved.

While the cost of the hormone therapy hasn’t been disclosed, Vox cites the Human Rights Campaign’s estimate “that trans-specific treatments can cost between $25,000 to $75,000, which is minimal compared to other health-care needs.” In addition, treatments can save on future health care costs “since some trans people may be less likely to struggle with gender dysphoria, depression, and other mental health issues after medically transitioning.”

Manning won’t be doing manual labor in prison, but ironically, will be employed: just this week the Guardian newspaper announced that it had hired Manning as an opinion writer.
Chelsea Manning has agreed to write opinion columns for the Guardian, from Fort Leavenworth prison.

I see that since the Guardian lost Greenwald, they’ve hired Chelsea Manning. IOW, they’ve learned nothing.

I don't get this. I thought convicted and jailed felons like Manning were not allowed to profit from their crimes? http://t.co/WyPwpGd7D9
