Olympian Nick Symmonds: 'I would gladly hand in all my weapons'

Olympic athlete and Runner’s World columnist Nick Symmonds was one of many who passed through Los Angeles International Airport on Nov. 1, the day a gunman shot and killed one TSA agent and wounded several others. Though he arrived at the airport after the shooting, the experience left Symmonds contemplating guns in America, to the point where he’s pledged in his newest column not to vote for any political candidate who does not support gun-control legislation.

Symmonds has a two-step plan: first, “[b]an assault rifles and handguns for everyone except police and military personnel,” and second, “allow responsible citizens to own rifles and shotguns.” Symmonds says he’d “gladly hand in all of my weapons if I knew that doing so would prevent any more gun-related murders in this country,” but not all of his followers were as eager to have that experiment forced upon them.
