Colorado assault weapon ban would outlaw pump-action shotgun, says state senator

We didn’t even know we wanted a shotgun until Vice President Joe Biden let us know just how awesome they are. There’s little to no aiming required, and if you feel threatened in your home, just fire a couple of shells off the balcony or through the front door into the darkness before heading back to bed. Imagine the disappointment in Colorado, then, if the state goes through with a ban that would outlaw the standard pump shotgun.

A shotgun ban? We know that Colorado’s state legislature is close to driving popular firearms manufacturer Magpul out of the state with a ban on high-capacity magazines, but how does that affect shotguns? State Sen. Greg Brophy told CBS4 that Colorado’s law, which has passed the state House, includes among its definition of high-capacity magazines those that can be readily converted to accept more than 15 rounds or eight shotgun shells. Because shotguns can be fitted with an extender to accept more than eight shells, they would be illegal to sell, transfer or even loan.

Would Dr. Biden be a criminal in Colorado if her shotgun held only two shells? While the federal assault weapons ban sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Chris Murphy currently sits idle, individual states are stepping in with their own fractured standards. New York’s SAFE Act, signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in January, classifies a semiautomatic shotgun with either a fixed magazine capacity of more than seven rounds or the ability to accept a detachable magazine as an assault weapon. As Brophy points out, manufacturers are unlikely to produce guns that can only be sold in certain states.

Government gun-grabbers insist they’re not trying to take anyone’s firearms, but is Joe Biden’s repeated praise of a shotgun with two shells a recommendation, or a sign of what “common sense gun regulations” will look like in practice?
