Former TV producer says CNN left Kaitlan Collins 'helpless' against Donald Trump's lies

CNN’s town hall with Donald Trump Wednesday night was a ratings winner for the network, pulling in Tucker Carlson numbers for the first time in a long time. The consensus seems to be that Trump walked away a winner as well. If there was any damage done, it was to the network’s reputation as a “straight news” source — there are plenty of stories about CNN employees anonymously venting their anger at their employer for giving Trump a platform.

We wish this source had a name, but he’s apparently a media veteran who says that town hall host Kaitlan Collins was basically “thrown to the wolves.” That sounds like mansplaining to us — Collins is only being criticized because she’s a woman.

Alexandra Steigrad reports:

CNN failed to arm Kaitlan Collins with the necessary tools to refute former President Donald Trump’s lie-filled rants during the contentious town hall, a media veteran told The Post.

The ratings-challenged network was slammed for its poor production value, which one source said was tantamount to throwing the 31-year-old Collins “to the wolves.”

“They needed to stop Trump from steamrolling her,” the longtime producer said of Wednesday night’s town hall with Trump.

Collins was left to verbally spar with Trump as he talked over her and at one point called her “nasty.”

“When someone is going to lie and you know he’s going to lie … you arm yourself with more than, ‘You said this.’ You have proof,” the source said. “This tactic could have disrupted Trump from steamrolling her.”

So she was steamrolled is the consensus.

It was CNN’s idea to host a town hall in the first place, and the man they’ve been lying about since he stepped off that escalator was prepared to give it right back to them. If we’re supposed to feel bad for Collins, we don’t.
