There's a saying that Washington D.C. is Hollywood for unattractive people. That quote, or myriad variations thereof, is credited to Paul Begala, dating back to the 1980s.
It's never been more true. Everything we've seen from Democrats occupying the Capitol these past several months has been nothing but performative politics. Some of it, like the trips to El Salvador to advocate for an MS-13 gang member, has backfired spectacularly on Democrats.
Voters see this. Nationally, Democratic Party approval is in the 20s, and it's all self-inflicted.
California Democrats are in the midst of a baffling battle over AB 379, a bill that would make it a felony to purchase a child for sex. The controversy is because some Democrats want to exclude 16- and 17-year-olds from the bill.
Why? Leftists are framing it as an LGBTQ issue.
I wrote about this mind-blowing battle in Sacramento, including my conversation with @carldemaio on context & backstory. It’s appalling and infuriating, especially because the radicals are trying to frame this as an LGBTQ rights issue. How dare they? https://t.co/nuSobVN3QZ

Here's more from Benson at Townhall (emphasis original):
State Sen. Scott Wiener told Playbook he was “just floored” by Grove trying to expand the law after agreeing to Democratic amendments last year. As opponents to the bill reiterated during the hearing today, Democrats want to remove 16- and 17-year-olds in large part because they fear parents upset about interracial or LGBTQ relationships involving older teens could prompt them to weaponize solicitation laws. Krell — a former prosecutor who has spent her career working on sex trafficking issues — told reporters she accepted the panel’s amendments because leaders had taken the bill off the agenda, and doing so was the only way to secure a hearing. When asked about Democrats’ long-held concerns about the age range, Krell still seemed surprised they wanted to maintain the carveout.
Get that? Those bigoted parents in California might use this law against LGBTQ or interracial relationships, and the CA Dems decided to err on the side of not making it a felony rather than protecting teens from sexual abuse and exploitation.
On the same day that debate rages on, Democrats had the audacity to wear denim for 'sexual assault awareness month:'
Perfect. They’re dressed for Sexual Assault Awareness Month while fiercely debating whether to close their own loophole allowing adults who purchase children for sex to avoid felony charges. Literal, despicable virtue signaling. Jeans proclaim one message, votes another. https://t.co/QjRj8Milyz

This is what the Democratic Party is: duplicitous hypocrites who will parade their moral superiority in public, and then vote in the exact opposite way.
We've seen it time and again with women. Democrats say they're the 'party of women' and then vote and advocate for men to have access to women's sports and safe spaces. They lie about the dangers of abortion, mischaracterize anti-abortion laws by saying they criminalize miscarriages, and call it 'healthcare' so when women -- fearful of being prosecuted for a miscarriage -- do break laws, the Democrats can use that to attack anti-abortion laws.
We've seen it in education, too. Democrats say they're for good public education, then keep schools closed for months over COVID, oppose school choice, and worry more about LGBTQ books in libraries than whether or not our children can read and write (and in a lot of public schools, they can't).
And we've seen it in gun control, where Democrats rent their garments whenever there's a mass shooting, and then propose laws that wouldn't have prevented said shooting, but would make law-abiding gun owners criminals and outlaw legal weapons.
They also want to have it both ways -- they'll classify 18- and 19-year-olds as 'children' so they can use gang violence as to pad numbers and claim shootings are the number one killer of kids.
But when it comes to classifying 16- and 17-year-olds as the minors they are? Nope. That's a field too far for Democrats. Because of LGBTQ and racial issues, of course. To Democrats, there is always an acceptable margin of harm that they'll trade to advance their agenda.
And now, Democrats are working to exclude teens from a sexual assault bill, because sacrificing a few 16-year-olds on the altar of LGBTQ/race is okay by them.
Then they'll show up in Sacramento, clad in denim, and pretend to be outraged by sexual assault.
I can only hope that CA voters, like national voters, finally start to see this insanity. While Kamala Harris won the state by a healthy margin, the shift to the right cannot be ignored. The Los Angeles wildfires opened many a Leftist eye to how incompetent and callous their so-called leaders are.
Wearing jeans can no longer mask that Democratic governance-by-virtue-signaling is failing Americans.
