@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Damn. You just pulled a Carlos Mencia on a local journo.

This morning, New York Times national political correspondent Jonathan Martin shared quite the scoop on alleged body-slamming congressional candidate Greg Gianforte:
I've obtained a copy of the Gallatin Co summons for Gianforte's assault charge > pic.twitter.com/wqKgU5oNLx
— Jonathan Martin (@jmartNYT) May 25, 2017
Just one minor problem:
You obtained it by taking the photo from my twitter feed: https://t.co/3pjw1V5fj4 https://t.co/znm5WWoyY6
— Whitney Bermes (@wabermes) May 25, 2017
Whitney Bermes, a reporter for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, indeed beat Martin to the punch:
A copy of Greg Gianforte's citation. There is no affidavit with it. #mtal pic.twitter.com/oP6k7CsTZz
— Whitney Bermes (@wabermes) May 25, 2017
Bermes’ photo went up nearly 45 minutes before Martin’s. And the two photos certainly look like one and the same.
Someone at the @nytimes owes @wabermes an explanation. The shadow in these two photos did not magically appear exactly the same. https://t.co/ut9eZDFNQw
— Kevin Van Valkenburg (@KVanValkenburg) May 25, 2017
@KVanValkenburg @nytimes Not only the shadow, but I used a scrap of paper to redact Mr. Gianforte's DL number. Exact same in the photo NYT posted.
— Whitney Bermes (@wabermes) May 25, 2017
For what it’s worth, Martin denies he ripped Bermes off:
Of course, by obtained, he means using the photo @wabermes took without attribution. https://t.co/CSYG70jFOS
— Michael Becker (@superjaberwocky) May 25, 2017
@superjaberwocky @wabermes you are wrong. and if you knew me, you would never suggest this.
— Jonathan Martin (@jmartNYT) May 25, 2017
@wabermes nope. had no idea you posted.
— Jonathan Martin (@jmartNYT) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @wabermes You used the exact same size of small paper to cover up his personal information? And the shadow on the paper's the same?
— Michael Becker (@superjaberwocky) May 25, 2017
@superjaberwocky you are welcome to email me.
— Jonathan Martin (@jmartNYT) May 25, 2017
You heard the guy: Email away.
It's entirely possible someone took it from your Twitter feed and gave it to another journalist. https://t.co/2SzuEMwvpJ
— Josh Bergeron (@Joshpberg) May 25, 2017
@Joshpberg Absolutely. I agree. But I would expect a paper like the NYT to verify where the photo came from & give proper credit.
— Whitney Bermes (@wabermes) May 25, 2017
But in the meantime, looks like Martin’s facing an uphill battle when it comes to defending himself:
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Why did you steal this from someone?
— Doomsday Library (@DoomsdayLibrary) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana you want to address how you snatched this without giving credit to @wabermes or are you just going to pretend this is yours?
— Victoria (@flower_bandit) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT Still no explanation for why you didn't credit the local reporter for the content you lifted?
— Chris Sacca (@sacca) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana 'Obtained' by nicking it from @wabermes' @twitter feed. Shame on you. @nytimes
— Comrade Weez (@weezmgk) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana He didn't obtain shit. He swiped a picture from someone's Twitter feed… What an embarrassment.
— Sal from NMC (@SalatNMC) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Credit @wabermes for providing this info, you hack.
— Fumblin' Rebel (@mrstevengomez) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Credit @wabermes. Don't steal others' work.
— RQ Skye (@rqskye) May 25, 2017
@sacca @jmartNYT busted. give credit where credit is due, NYT.
— heidi home once more (@heidiheilig) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana C'mon. You got busted poaching an image. Admit it.
— Danny Clayton (@DannyClayton) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Give the local reporter her credit
— Carson C. Pfingston (@carsonpfingston) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana You stole it from another reporter without credit. ?
— NC (@11n11a11d11) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT This seems to be a photo you copied without attribution from @wabermes, and that's both terribly unprofessional and lousy. Please correct!
— wideofthepost (@wideofthepost) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT Hey @nytimes : Be better. Don't steal the work of local journalists. Credit to @wabermes
— Michael Martelle (@MartelleMichael) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana This sort of depends on what your definition of "obtained" is…
— Cindy Johnson (@DJohn36755) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana In the NYT style book is obtained just another word for lifted from someone else ?
— Make Me Great Again (@CharliefromNYC) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana "Obtained." I think you mean "stole."
— ????SM???? (@TheStevenMaier) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana You stole this photo from a local reporter. You didn't obtain it. Stop lying.
— Rolf Tengdin (@RTengdin) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana No credit given to original source? You credit "anonymous" sources for phantom memos. Consistent much?
— Wanda Johnson (@WandaJo43326514) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana As someone who actually supports the @nytimes, I really hope you didn't take this photo from @wabermes. Media distrust is bad enough already
— Michael Namikas (@Mikeaveli2682) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Jonathan – I'm a reporter myself. NYT already has an unsavory reputation for failing 2give credit where credit is due. Don't make it worse.
— marymcnamara (@marymcnamara) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Not giving credit is giving you, all journalists (of which I am a part), and especially the @NYTimes a bad name. Shame on you.
— Xing Li (@xingtheli) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana Wow. Shame on you .https://t.co/Hst4YGEI27
— DernDawn ⛱ (@noprezzie2012) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana by stealing it from another reporter. Great job Asshole.
— valerie (@valsocal) May 25, 2017
@jmartNYT @GregForMontana You're a douche.
